Service Overview
The Center at Lutheran Settlement House is a place to grow. A place to be inspired and explore. A place to be cared for and to care for others. For adults 55 and over, we offer a range of programming for right now and for what’s next. Come explore fitness and dance classes, personalized health coaching, volunteering to help others, creative arts, trips and excursions, digital literacy, healthy cooking, and more. You will learn new skills, meet new friends, and plan for the future. The Center has something for everyone.

Programs
Activities and Events
Each week, we offer more than 20 different classes, workshops, and activities. Whether you’re looking to meet new people, pick up an old hobby, or try something new, the Center has something for everyone.
Food and Nutrition
At the Center, members can eat lunch with friends, pick up free groceries, and attend nutrition and cooking classes. We also host monthly restaurant-style community dinners open to the entire community.
Health Coaching
Through our Health Coaching program, members 55 and over can work with a personal health coach to set and achieve goals, access health and wellness resources, and practice new skills and habits.
Resources and Support
We help members access benefits, navigate systems, and connect with community resources. Whether you have questions about your benefits or are looking for a support group, we’ll answer your questions or find someone who can!
Volunteering
LSH serves more than 6,000 people each year, thanks in large part to our talented and committed volunteers. Many of our Center members enjoy volunteering in our Food Pantry and at our shelter, Jane Addams Place.

Office Hours with Nurse Practitioner
Description for Office Hours with Nurse Practitioner
Do you have health or medicine-related questions that don’t necessarily warrant a trip to the doctor? Get your questions answered by coming out to office hours with a nurse practitioner. From 9am-12pm, and 1pm-2pm, we will have a nurse practitioner available to answer all of your health-related questions, do blood pressure screenings, and more! There will be a health presentation from 12-1pm.
This service is open to anyone 55+, no registration required.

Cardio Drumming
Description for Cardio Drumming
Cardio drumming combines creativity and fitness into one fun exercise. This class involves “drumming” on an exercise ball and dancing with music as a form of exercise. Our experienced Coach Jackee leads this hour-long drumming class that can help to improve your coordination and ability to focus while strengthening your arms and core. Come try it out!

Choice Pantry & Farm Stand

Join us every Thursday for our Free Choice Pantry & Farm Stand. Beginning at 10am, we will be distributing canned goods, fresh fruits and vegetables, and other food

Join volunteer instructors Marie and Barbara in this weekly crochet circle meeting. The circle is a great way to make friends, improve your crocheting skills, or learn how to crochet in the first place!

Picture Book Workshop
Description for Picture Book Workshop
Introduction to Picture Book Illustration, Writing and Publishing
Help create a children’s picture book! In this weekly class, participants will start with simple prompts to help them decide on a theme. They then will then begin to doodle illustrative ideas based on the single prompt we choose. By creating pictures first, and then adding the written word, participants will be able to develop a picture book that will ultimately lead to a completed manuscript. With guidance from the class instructor Sheena Garcia, adults will illustrate a group picture book. The group will illustrate the book by using paint, cut paper and fabric. The books will be prepared for printed copies and then presented to preschoolers at our book launch and reading event.

Restaurant Trip to Olive Garden
Description for Restaurant Trip to Olive Garden
Join other senior center members at the Olive Garden (9280 Roosevelt Blvd, Philadelphia, PA 19115) for our monthly restaurant trip. Transportation is not provided, however, CCT rides are available at no cost if you have a CCT ID and make your reservation through the center.

Qigong Class

Join us for Qigong classes! Qigong is a system of coordinated body-posture and movement, breathing, and meditation used to optimize energy within the body, mind, and spirit, with the goal of improving and maintaining health and well-being. Classes are open to all levels & abilities, 55+.

Enhance Fitness Exercise
Description for Enhance Fitness Exercise
Exercise is a whole lot of fun in this evidence-based Enhance Fitness exercise program. Participants are led by a certified instructor in an hour long class focused on dynamic cardiovascular exercise, strength training, balance, and flexibility.
A typical one-hour session includes:
- A 5-minute warm-up to get the blood flowing to the muscles
- A 20-minute aerobic workout that gets participants moving
- A 5-minute cool-down to lower the heart rate safely
- A 20-minute strength training workout with soft cuff weights on the arms and legs (0 up to 20 pounds)
- A 10-minute stretching workout to keep the muscles flexible
- Dynamic and static balance exercises throughout the class
- Lots of opportunities for participants to make new friends

Mat Yoga

Join us for a yoga series led by Roots 2 Rise. In Touch Yoga is a blend of physical yoga practice, breathwork, and meditation, designed specifically for people to become more in touch with their bodies. It focuses on relieving tension in the body and building strength and balance. This practice is accessible to everyone at all levels. Please bring your own mat!

Join us for Music Therapy with Settlement Music School therapists. Music therapy is a type of therapy which uses music interventions to accomplish individualized goals with a credentialed professional. Music therapy interventions can address a variety of healthcare & educational goals:

Get your exercise in the fun way and try out our Zumba class! Zumba is a widely popular fitness program that involves cardio and Latin-inspired dance. Zumba Gold is the lower-intensity version of a typical Zumba class and was designed to meet the anatomical, physiological and psychological needs of seniors.
