Service Overview
At Lutheran Settlement House, seniors build community with each other, participating in activities that promote healthy living and support their goals of leading self-determined lives. Our seniors learn skills like cooking, painting, line dancing, and meditation. They share meals together and play games, including Bingo. And our seniors have access to health coaching so they can stay active and independent.

Enhance Fitness Exercise
Description for Enhance Fitness Exercise
Exercise is a whole lot of fun in this evidence-based Enhance Fitness exercise program. Participants are led by a certified instructor in an hour long class focused on dynamic cardiovascular exercise, strength training, balance, and flexibility.
A typical one-hour session includes:
- A 5-minute warm-up to get the blood flowing to the muscles
- A 20-minute aerobic workout that gets participants moving
- A 5-minute cool-down to lower the heart rate safely
- A 20-minute strength training workout with soft cuff weights on the arms and legs (0 up to 20 pounds)
- A 10-minute stretching workout to keep the muscles flexible
- Dynamic and static balance exercises throughout the class
- Lots of opportunities for participants to make new friends

Dance/Movement Therapy
Description for Dance/Movement Therapy
Join us for Dance & Movement Therapy with Settlement Music School therapists. Dance/movement (DMT) is a type of therapy that uses movement to help individuals achieve emotional, cognitive, physical, and social integration. Beneficial for both physical and mental health, dance therapy can be used for stress reduction, disease prevention, and mood management. In addition, DMT’s physical component offers increased muscular strength, coordination, mobility, and decreased muscular tension

Trip to Eastern State Penitentiary
Description for Trip to Eastern State Penitentiary
Join us on a trip to Eastern State Penitentiary! Meet us there, or depart with the group from LSH via public transportation. Participants will have the opportunity to do the self-guided audio tour. This rich, stereo soundscape mixes dozens of voices – including three former wardens and 25 guards and prisoners – creating an intimate walking tour of Eastern State’s cellblocks and yards. You will get an mp3 player and headphones that will guide you through the penitentiary complex and explain the prison’s history.

Diabetes Self-Management Workshop
Description for Diabetes Self-Management Workshop
Are you age 60 and over and have diabetes or care for someone who does? Join this in-person evidence-based workshop and learn how to self-manage your condition and symptoms!
Topics include:
-How to address symptoms such as fatigue, pain, low/high blood sugar, stress, and emotional difficulties (depression, anger, fear, & frustration)
-Improve strength and endurance
-Healthy eating and menu planning
-Blood sugar management & proper foot care
-Communication skills
-Action planning, decision making, and problem solving
This is a 6-week, highly interactive workshop occurring weekly. This workshop is open to anyone 60+ but registration is required and spots are limited. Registrants should plan to attend all 6 classes. Family Support Group
Description for Family Support Group
We will be hosting two support group sessions in the month of October. The support group will be focused on addressing family conflict, issues with mental health or substance abuse in the family, etc. This will be a peer led support group for adults with a loved one who has experienced symptoms of a substance abuse disorder or mental health condition. However, anyone experiencing family conflict is welcome to share their experiences and learn healthy coping mechanisms and communication techniques!
