Its Fifth Annual “Women of Courage: Women of Inspiration” Awards.

Established by Lutheran Settlement House in 2005, the Women of Courage: Women of Inspiration Awards recognize Philadelphia-area women who have courageously overcome difficult situations, made important achievements to improve their lives, and have found the spirit to change the lives of others and make a difference in our communities.

Jane Addams Award

    Estelle Richman, Secretary, Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare

“It is because of Estelle’s commitment to the health and welfare of Philadelphian’s that Lutheran Settlement House is honored to have her as the 2009 recipient of the Jane Addams award,” says Rose M. Brandt, Executive Director of LSH.

  • Award for Excellence in Adult Literacy
    Sallie Glickman, founding Executive Director, Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board (PWIB)

The Excellence in Adult Literacy Award recognizes a woman who has heightened public awareness of adult literacy needs in Philadelphia and has encouraged innovative learning at home, or in work and community settings.

  • Outstanding Returning Adult Student Award
    Yvrose Magloire from Sisters of Saint Joseph Welcome Center

The Outstanding Returning Student Award recognizes a woman who has demonstrated initiative and tenacity by returning to school as an adult, and thereby serving as a role model to others.

  • Inspiration Award
    Nancy Rodriguez, Supervisor of Health Promotions, Asociación en Puertoriqueños Marcha (APM)

The Inspiration Award recognizes a woman who has demonstrated a clear contribution to the community, and serves as an inspiration to other senior women

  • Spirit Award
    Janice Knuth, AT Funding Coordinator and Low Vision Specialist, Institute on Disabilities at Temple University

The Spirit Award recognizes a woman who serves as an advocate for the needs of Senior Citizens in the community.

  • Courage Award
    Ginger Osborne, Women in Transition Survivor’s Network

The Courage Award recognizes a survivor of domestic violence who has helped victims and other survivors overcome the many challenges associated with domestic violence.

  • Purple Ribbon Award
    Rev. Myra Maxwell, Pastor/Founder, Restoration Interdenominational Ministries, Inc.

The Purple Ribbon Award recognizes a woman who has demonstrated a strong commitment to education and to raising awareness about domestic violence in our community.

  • Dignity Award
    Kimberly Powell, Paralegal, Nattiel, Seay & Associates, P.C.

The Dignity Award recognizes a formerly homeless woman who has overcome great obstacles in her life or at work.

  • Impact Award
    Dainette Mintz, Deputy Managing Director for Special Housing, Director, Office of Supportive Housing

The Impact Award recognizes a woman who has demonstrated a strong commitment to ending homelessness, and who has worked on behalf of homeless individuals.

  • Youth Advocate Award
    Dorothy Johnson-Speight, founder of Mothers in Charge, Org
The Youth Advocate Award recognizes a women who serves as an advocate for the needs of youth in Philadelphia
