Awardees this year:
Woman of Courage Commitment Award – Honoring Ruth Bartelt for her steadfast support and commitment to Lutheran Settlement House and for her career of achievement. Ruth has been the President and CEO of Silver Springs – Martin Luther School for many years, guiding Silver Springs through years of growth and transformation. Silver Springs offers a holistic approach to improving the developmental, emotional, educational, spiritual, and social well-being of children and families.
Woman of Courage Communication and Advocacy Award –Honoring Lorraine Ballard Morrill for her dedication to the women of Philadelphia, specifically for work in combating prejudice, destigmatizing HIV infection, and for her dedication to supporting women and men that have survived intimate partner violence. Lorraine is a leader in the national and Philadelphia communication industry and serves as a daily role model and mentor to women of color.
Outstanding Student Award- Honoring Theresa Kellenbenz. Working with LSH, Theresa earned her GED in spite of many struggles she has overcome raising her developmentally disabled daughter. She now has a job and is able to provide all of her children with a stable home.
Spirit Award- Honoring Theresa Venhaus, who has participated in LSH’s programs for most of her life. Today, she assists other seniors with her volunteer work and her generous spirit. She has served as an advocate for the needs of senior citizens in the community and helps to make senior voices heard.
Purple Ribbon Award- Our awardee spent her entire life homeless until she came to LSH’s Sheila Brown transitional housing program. Today, she is employed, has found permanent housing, and is an amazing mother. (name withheld to preserve her confidentiality)
Dignity Award- Honoring Regina Hightower, who had previously been through the shelter system twice with her children. With the help of Jane Addams Place, she now has a stable home for her children. In addition, Reggie, her 15-year old son, has become an advocate for preventing teen dating violence and is a high achieving student planning on college.
