|
When: Wednesday, 5th March from 3pm to 7pm.
Where: Ten Thousand Villages is located at 8331 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia, PA.
You are invited to join Lutheran Settlement House, Ten Thousand Villages in Chestnut Hill, and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) in celebration of International Women’s Day for a unique fundraising event.
On this date, enjoy an evening of shopping for unique handcrafted products made by artisans around the world, available only at Ten Thousand Villages, and 10% of all profits will be donated to LSH to support necessary programs that help vulnerable women in need, including domestic violence counseling, services to homeless families, and education and employment training. Not only will you help support Lutheran Settlement House, you’ll promote grassroots development by buying ethically traded gifts.
Ten Thousand Villages in Chestnut Hill is a nonprofit retail store specializing in unique fairly traded, handmade gifts, jewelry, home décor and personal accessories from the diverse cultures of artisans around the globe. The organization strives to improve the livelihood of more than 60,000 disadvantaged artisans in 35 countries by establishing a sustainable market for handmade products, and building long term buying relationships in places where skilled artisan partners lack opportunities for stable income. Product sales help pay for food, education, healthcare and housing for artisans who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. On Wednesday March 5, you can put those sales to work for Lutheran Settlement House!
Ten Thousand Villages is located at 8331 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia, PA. For more information, call 215-242-3040, or email manager.chestnuthillATtenthousandvillages.com. |
| Stop Budget Cuts for Domestic Violence Victim Services! |
Please pass on the following opportunity for important advocacy work:
As you may already know the President’s Fiscal Year 2009 budget proposes devastating cuts to domestic violence victim services and state funding levels have remained stagnate for the past few years despite the fact that operating costs have risen dramatically. Now is a crucial time to act on these devastating blows to domestic violence funding!

No prior experience or knowledge is necessary. We will provide scripts and sample letters to make contacting your legislators quick & easy. | LSH's Director of Marketing and Philanthropy, Suzette Belz, is a recipient of the El Sol’s 2008 Crystal Award in the category of Community Leader |
Lutheran Settlement House is pleased to announce that our Director of Marketing and Philanthropy, Suzette Belz, is a recipient of the El Sol’s 2008 Crystal Award in the category of Community Leader
Ms. Belz will receive the award on Saturday July 19th, at a banquet held at the Felton Super Club in Philadelphia.
Ms. Belz was honored as a Community Leader due to her creative initiatives and campaigns that have had an enormous impact on vulnerable Philadelphians. Two of the most successful of these initiatives she created and led are the Annual Women of Courage Awards and the Purple Ribbon Campaign. Now in its fourth year, the Women of Courage Awards celebrates Philadelphia women who have struggled against steep odds to improve their communities and their own lives. The 2008 Women of Courage Awards was the most successful yet, and was attended by Governor Rendell and honored Philadelphia’s first lady, Lisa Nutter. The Women of Courage event has also served to attract the attention and financial support of the corporate community in the region.
Ms. Belz’s most important campaign, The Purple Ribbon Campaign, has grown from a neighborhood based initiative to a city-wide effort to raise awareness about domestic violence and increase financial support to victims of abuse in the Philadelphia area. In only four years, Ms. Belz’s initiatives increased the corporate and individual support to LSH by more than 300%!
“I am extremely grateful to be honored, along with 15 other recipients, with this award from El Sol,” says Ms. Belz, “and I wish them all the best as they celebrate 16 years serving the Latino community in Philadelphia. Thank you so much for this award. I am deeply honored, and deeply moved by this recognition.”
