Children don't have to be physically or verbally abused
themselves to be hurt by domestic violence, which is why, with
the help of the Alonya P. Saraka Children’s Fund, LSH holds
an annual awareness and prevention event for children and young
adults called Listen Up: Young Artists Have Something to Say About
Domestic Violence. Part of LSH’s annual Purple Ribbon Campaign,
Listen Up! is the only creative arts initiative in Philadelphia
addressing the impact of domestic violence on children. This year
LSH partnered with the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program (PMAP) to
gather entries for the contest. Students between the ages of 10
and 18 from Big Picture, a year-long mural-training opportunity
provided by the PMAP, were invited to express their feelings and
opinions about violence in the home through LSH’s yearly
art contest.

BILINGUAL
Domestic Violence Awareness Campaign
LSH TO LAUNCH 2ND ANNUAL PURPLE RIBBON CAMPAIGN OCTOBER
1ST!
Last fall, LSH launched its first annual Purple Ribbon Campaign,
a three-month city-wide initiative to raise awareness about domestic
violence. The Purple Ribbon Campaign is one of many LSH efforts
designed to educate the public about the issue of domestic violence
and to draw greater attention to domestic violence in Philadelphia.
It also helps LSH raise the funds needed to continue to provide
services such as counseling, legal/ medical advocacy, and education
and training, free-of-charge, to women and children who are victims
of or witnesses to domestic violence, and to members of the community
interested in learning more about the issue.
Why Purple?
Purple has long been the color of the women's movement, beginning
with the suffragettes and is a symbol of pain and suffering . Purple
ribbons are going to be sold for $1 each at community events, local
businesses, etc. For more information, 215-426-8610 ext 208

Domestic Violence Buddy Bear Program |
Each year in the winter, Lutheran Settlement House, in
collaboration with the Philadelphia Police Department, holds a
Buddy Bear Campaign, aimed to protect child witnesses of Domestic
Violence (DV). LSH turns over armloads of handmade teddy bears,
outfitted with lavender ribbons carrying LSH’s DV hotline
number, to the Philadelphia Police. Police offices citywide will
comfort children by providing them with the teddy bears when responding
to DV calls. The bears for children, combined with hotline information
for adults, help foster a supportive and holistic intervention
method between DV victims and police offices on the front line
of that intervention. For more information, call 215-426-8610 ext 208
