A PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE: WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
The workshop will explore what pastors, educators, congregational care givers, and church leaders need to know about domestic violence even if it seems not to be an issue in your church. It will share principles and methods for creating a safe and healing environment in your congregation for those impacted by domestic abuse, and for providing safe and effective care and support especially when both the victim and perpetrator are with you.
Presenter: Roger L. Steffy, MDiv, Director, ADVANCE Program. ADVANCE is a program of Lutheran Social Services of South Central PA, offering alternatives to domestic violence for perpetrators of abuse. Pastor Steffy is an ordained minister with 14 years of pastoral experience and has done extensive domestic violence education work with clergy and churches. RADAR, A MODEL SCREENING AND INTERVENTION TOOL FOR FAITH LEADERS
RADAR is a nationally recognized tool that has been used by the medical community over the last decade to identify and respond to victims of domestic violence in hospital settings. Using the results of a project involving conversations with local pastors in the Philadelphia area, this workshop will explore ways the RADAR model can be adapted to religious settings. We will present the resulting recommendations for faith leaders, social ministry organizations, and lay people to identify and respond effectively to victims of domestic violence.
Presenter: Ana Lisa Yoder, MSS, LSW, is the Director of the LSH’s Bilingual Domestic Violence Program. The BDVP provides counseling, advocacy, and education services for victims of domestic violence. FAMILY VIOLENCE:
THE CONNECTION BETWEEN CHILD ABUSE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
There is a pervasive and insidious connection between adult domestic violence and child abuse. Even the most conservative estimates identify that children are 15 times more likely to be abused in a household where adult domestic violence is present. This workshop will discuss the reality of families experiencing both domestic violence and child abuse. In addition, the difficulties in merging these two diverse fields of practice will be identified. Not only is it important for those individuals in the community to acknowledge this link, but also to respond with treatment and protective resources that will support the entire family.
Presenters: Sarah Amazeen, MSW is the Associate Director of Domestic Violence and Supportive Services for the Lutheran Settlement House. Sarah has extensive experience in providing counseling and advocacy services to survivors of domestic violence and their children. Additionally, she routinely provides professional trainings related to gender-based violence and the impact of domestic violence on the family and the community. Karen Authier is Vice President of Program at Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska. She is a Licensed Mental Health Practitioner and Licensed Master Social Worker with over 30 years of experience in mental health and child welfare. She currently serves on the Nebraska Governor’s Commission for Protection of Children and the Nebraska Child Death Review Team. She is a Past President of the Foster Family Based Treatment Association and has chaired statewide commissions and task forces on child welfare, child abuse and juvenile justice.

THE IMPACT OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ON CHILDREN: WORKING WITH SURVIVORS AND THEIR CHILDREN
Thousands of children experience domestic violence in their home annually.

Presenter: Linda Olsen MATh, MSW, is a Senior Planner with the City of Seattle’s Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention Office. She moved into this position at the beginning of 2006 after over 13 years with Eastside Domestic Violence Program in Bellevue, Washington, first as Shelter Director, then as Executive Director.
